Our Approach

Building and maintaining the infrastructure that powers the world is no easy task. You understand that and that’s why you need a partner who understands it just as well. We understand that one day you might be focused on capital improvement projects, and the next you're navigating how the latest industry regulations affect your plant’s operations.

Modernizing and expanding power delivery systems requires more than just talk about building a smart grid. That’s why our teams of designers and engineers are backed by scientists, planners, real estate experts, and construction management professionals who ensure your projects stay on track.

When it comes to renewable energy, we’re with you from the very beginning. In fact, we’re industry leaders in its development. We’ve been on the ground at some of the world’s most renowned hydropower plants, guiding the process from initial permitting and design through to decommissioning when needed. We’re also working alongside you to bring innovative wind and solar farms to life.

Think Global, Act Local. Power facilities are often prominent in their communities and hold personal significance for residents, making the presence of local teams essential. At the same time, we bring specialized expertise from across the company to enhance and support our local projects.

The most successful investments focus on the bigger picture, evaluating a project from all perspectives. This involves tackling long-term environmental, community, and economic challenges with context sensitive solutions.

One of our core principles, reflecting our values and culture, is to be a trusted advisor. This means prioritizing our clients' needs, going beyond the standard role of a consultant, and fostering long lasting relationships.

Some of the most innovative solutions arise from thinking and responding beyond traditional boundaries. Focused on what’s best for your community, we collaborate with you to assess your current project status, identify your goals, and determine the path we’ll take together to achieve them.

CUSTOMER VALUE
Bridge Power, High Reliability, High Efficiency, Path to Zero-Carbon Power

Beginning in 2021, a large colocation data centre had their local electrical utility severely limit new grid connection permits. The site had a power utility connection agreement in place for only part of their necessary campus demand. The utility advised of the potential for a new connection, but not until 2029. The colo needed highly reliable and efficient on-site generation to meet the needs of their hyper-scaler customer and chose multiple Titan™ 130 generators from Solar Turbines as the basis for their continuous duty power solution. The campus consists of four buildings totaling 120 MW peak IT load with a design PUE of about 1.3. DECI’s experience and capabilities were key in meeting the colo’s primary requirements of bridging the power utility gap while achieving low emissions, maintaining a grid-type cost of electricity, and providing a path to zero-carbon power.

◽️ PGM130 Generator Sets; 16 MW each Wight combined cycle (CCGT) plus two open cycle (0C)

◽️ Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG); Eight total

◽️ Steam Turbine Generators (STG); two at 18 MW

◽️ Fuel: Natural gas with up to 20% H2 today, 100% H2 in future & HV0 (renewable diesel)

Given the limited real estate, DECI installed 220 MW of gas generation (45% more than the original gas reciprocating engine solution) to power the remaining data centre halls with Tier III required availability.

Critical customer decision factors included:

Ability of the PGM130 based combined cycle power plant to facilitate permitting, meeting 18.5 mg/Nm3 (9 ppm) without SCR (selective catalytic reduction).

◽️ Very low H20 usage. No water needed for combustion.

◽️ No lube oil combustion (which aids permitting).

◽️ Dual fuel gas turbines able to run on HVO and natural gas, including 20% H2 in natural gas blends with the ability to burn up to 100% H2 when available.

◽️ High power density of the solution.

◽️ Local manufacturer support presence able to deliver and service in Dublin metropolitan area.

The delivery schedule met customer expectations with four PGM130 gas turbine packages arriving on site to power the first data centre ramp-up in open cycle. Subsequent gas
turbine packages and related combined cycle, high efficiency equipment arrived on time to meet the hyperscaler tenant’s growing requirements.

Cogeneration Expansion Feasibility Study

Cogeneration Expansion Feasibility Study

We provided engineering services to Hyperscaler to conduct a Cogeneration Feasibility Study. The analysis was to determine the viability to implement a cogeneration plant to optimize utility costs and meet the future needs and growing demands of the new campus.

The cogeneration expansion can provide the campus with long term economic and reliable energy independence at a time when existing grid power is unavailable and coal-fired energy plants are being closed yielding uncertainty in future electric costs.

Clients goals were to determine the viability of installing a new natural gas turbine generator or
engine, coupled with Heat Recovery Steam Generation, and to determine the impact on the existing natural gas and electrical infrastructure.

◽️ Project cost estimate for preferred options
◽️ Spreadsheet of engineering economics, including return on investment
◽️ Logistics study to determine best expansion location
◽️ Report documenting all key findings

The final report included a description of the analysis, discussion of all key findings, our recommended path forward, and appendices with any applicable support documentation including equipment budgetary proposals, cost estimates, general arrangement drawings, NPV cost analyses, and key variable sensitivity analyses.

Our Offering

At DECI, we help businesses navigate the complex world of electric utilities. Developers, landowners, and utility customers often find themselves lost in a sea of utility jargon and acronyms—such as CIAC, Tariff, Schedule or Rule XX, T&D kW, kWh, kVA, power factor, load factor, and TOU. Requesting too much from the utility upfront can lead to unnecessary costs, sometimes reaching hundreds of thousands or even millions, while delaying critical project timelines. On the other hand, asking for too little can leave you at a competitive disadvantage.

Most businesses don’t have the time or in-house expertise to fully understand the intricate terminology and regulations of electric utilities. That’s where DECI steps in. We guide you through the process, providing insights and ensuring you understand exactly how and where your money is being spent.

With extensive experience working with electric utilities around the world, we know that every utility operates under its own set of rules and regulations. Having the right contacts is the first crucial step. Let DECI help you navigate the process and keep your project moving forward.
